Houston may be starting their season with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick but they have secured themselves a quarterback for the future.
Texans have acquired quarterback Ryan Mallett from the New England Patriots. ESPN reports the Patriots receive a conditional sixth or seventh round draft pick in 2016. Texans cut quarterback Case Keenum to make room for Mallett.
Mallett has served as Tom Brady's primary backup for the last two season. He was drafted in the third round in 2011 out of Arkansas by New England. He was entering the final year of his contract and was passed on the depth chart by rookie Jimmy Garoppolo this preseason.
