Kansas City made it clear that they want to keep quarterback Alex Smith around for a long time. The Chiefs signed Smith to a $68 million extension that will keep him with the team through 2018. Smith had one year left on his current deal.
The Chiefs acquired Smith in a trade last year from the San Francisco 49ers. He is due $7.5 million this season and will receive $45 million in new guarantees.
Smith had the best season of his career last season with the Chiefs. He threw for 3,313 yards and 23 touchdowns with only seven interceptions while leading the Chiefs to a 11-5 record and the playoffs. His win loss-record is fourth best in the league and his percent of passes intercepted is tied for best in the league.
