Rico Gathers will start the season not playing for the Cowboys.

On June 14 the NFL announced that the 25-year-old tight end was being suspended without pay for the first game of the regular season for violation of the NFL's policy and program on substances of abuse. The suspension is a result of his in 2018 for marijuana possession.

Gathers can practice and play through the preseason but will not be available to hit the field until the week of September 9th.

Gathers was drafted by Dallas in 2016 but has yet to make a significant impact amassing just three receptions for 45 yards in his three year career.

With the suspension Gathers chances of making the final 53-man roster is greatly diminished.
