Nnamdi Asomugha Retires

Less than three years after being the most sought after cornerback in free agency, Nnamdi Asomugha' NFL career is finished. Once regarded as one of the premiere shutdown corners in the league, his career had taken a dive in the last few years.

Asomugha was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2003 out of University of California Berkley. He played free safety in college but was switched to cornerback by the Raiders. He would prove to be a welcome addition on their struggling team.

He recorded 60 tackles his first season, 50 tackles the next season and 34 tackles his third season as teams started to throw away from his side of the ball. He would be made team captain in the 2008 season where he was tested only 27 times all season resulting in just eight completions and be named to the 2009 pro-bowl.

Asomugha was rewarded in the off-season with a new three year contract that made him the highest paid defensive back in the NFL. He did not disappoint. Following the 2009 season he would make the 2010 pro  bowl. The 2010 season would be his best as he would not give up a touchdown all season and be named to the 2011 pro bowl.

Asomugha would enter the 2011 off-season as the most highly regarded free agent available. The Philadelphia Eagles would scoop him up for a five year $60 million deal. Rather than keep him at cornerback as the Raiders had done, the Eagles asked Asomugha to play all five secondary positions. It would prove to be a disaster for both the team and for Asomugha. He would finish the 2011 season with just 35 tackles and three interceptions. During his two years the team would finish just 12-20 and miss the playoffs both years.

After the second disappointing season, Eagles wanted to restructure Asomugha's contract but could not reach a deal with him so he was released. He would be signed to a one year deal with the San Francisco 49ers in April of 2013 but was released on November 4.
On December 26 Asomugha signed a one day deal with the Oakland Raiders so he could retire with the team who gave him his start in the league.

Outside of his time with the Raiders, Asomugha was a major disappointment in Philadelphia and San Francisco. He was never able to recreate the same success he had in Oakland leaving many to wonder if part of this success came from playing in such a weak division. No one can say for sure what led to such a drastic fall off in success and production but the 32 year old has chosen to walk away from the game. Part of his decision to leave now may have to do with his recent marriage to actress Kerry Washington and the announcement of her pregnancy with their first child. Whatever the case his early years in the league will be remembered positively even if the latter ones are not.

Black Monday Firings

Black Monday came in the NFL and to no surprise five coaches faced the chopping block. One coach Gary Kubiak was fired three weeks ago, leaving six vacancies in the NFL right now. While there are still questions about a few more coaches who are facing the ax, here are those that have already lost their job:

Washington Redskins- The Redskins had a terrible season faced with humiliating losses, injuries and a coaching ineptitude that never improved. Mike Shanahan brought in his son Kyle to be the offensive coordinator which only created more problems. When players questioned coaching decisions Kyle made, going to his father would only create further issues and tension within the team. Shanahan's decision to sit RGIII for the last three games of the season only created more problems, and would lead to his ultimate demise. This team is in need of a serious overhaul on the offensive and defensive line and in need of a fresh perspective at head coach. Art Briles, Jay Gruden, Darrell Bevell and Russ Grimm are likely candidates but don't rule out owner Daniel Snyder looking to the college ranks to get his next head coach.

Detroit Lions- Pre-season predictions had the Lions as a potential playoff contender in the NFC North. On paper this team is young, talented and very promising on both sides of the ball. Despite the talent, the young team lacked discipline, becoming one of the most penalized teams in the league. Quarterback Matthew Stafford has seen his production start to drop off and the lack of a top quality number two receiver has been very costly. On defense the secondary has been suspect and given up leads in multiple games. Complaints of Jim Schwartz's lack of disciplining and developing his players led to his inevitable firing. They also fired offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and receivers coach Tim Lappano. The team will need to work on their secondary and receiver issues and figure out how to do so with their enormous cap problem. Lovie Smith, Bill O'Brien, Jon Gruden and Ken Whisenhunt are the most likely candidates for this vacancy.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Bucs didn't just fire head coach Greg Schiano but general manager Mark Dominik as well. When Schiano started out 6-4 last season things looked very promising, but when they finished losing five out of their last six, the wheels fell off. They started this season losing their first eight games and getting rid of QB Josh Freeman who turned into a complete bust as a leader of the team. Add to this an MRSA outbreak and an injury to RB Doug Martin, and this team was doomed to fail. Bucs are fine on cap space for next year and don't have major issues to address, but they will need to get their house in order quick and find a new GM and HC quickly. Lovie Smith, Bill O'Brien, Adam Gase and Mike Zimmer are all possible candidates for head coach.

Minnesota Vikings- The Vikings had an explosive defense just two years ago, but now their defense is less than stellar and their offense is atrocious so the firing of head coach Leslie Frazier was not a surprise. QB Christian Ponder has proven to be a major disappointment. Bringing in QB Josh Freeman was an enormous mistake and QB Matt Cassel has been underwhelming. This team will need to fix their defense and find a franchise quarterback to fix their most glaring problems. Darrell Bevell, James Franklin and Kevin Sumlin are the candidates being discussed for head coach.

Cleveland Browns- The firing of head coach Rob Chudzinksi after just one season completely surprised the Browns fans and players. While the team finished just 4-12 the Browns were expected to struggle this season as they try to rebuild. They lack a franchise quarterback, and traded away their top running back for a first round draft pick this coming season. They do not have a good number one wide receiver and need to make major changes on their defense. Salary cap is not an issue but they will need to resign their center Alex Mack who is a free agent this off-season. Josh McDaniels, Lovie Smith, Kevin Sumlin and Ray Horton are all considered candidates for this job.

Houston Texans- The Texans fired head coach Gary Kubiak three weeks ago. This is after the team started out 2-0 and went on to lose the next 14 straight games. This team had issues at quarterback with Matt Schaub struggling before being injured and then being replaced by Case Keenum who would also struggle and be replaced by Schaub. RB Arian Foster would be sidelined most of the season with a back injury and the often injured LB Brian Cushing would be out for the season with a broken leg and torn LCL. Texans will have to find a quality second wide receiver and a good secondary to get back to being competitive in the AFC South. Jon Gruden, Jay Gruden, Greg Roman and Tom Cable are all possible candidates for the job.

Atlanta Falcons- The Falcons did not fire head coach Mike Smith but did fire their offensive line coaches Paul Dunn and Pat Hill and defensive line coach Ray Hamilton. After a dismal 4-12 season this was not surprising. Their offense struggled after WR Julio Jones went out and RB Stephen Jackson never took off. The defense allowed more points than in previous seasons and will quickly have to addres their line issues on both sides of the ball.

So far no other coaches have been fired but this doesn't mean every coach remaining is safe. There are still questions in Tennessee and Dallas that need to be addressed, so there may still be more to come very soon.

Tony Gonzalez Retires

The end of an era has finally come..at least for Tony Gonzalez. As the Falcons prepare for the final game of the season against the Panthers, Gonzalez prepares to suit up for the final time.

Gonzalez will be considered the greatest tight end of all time. The sixteen year veteran is a thirteen time pro bowl selection. He currently holds the NFL records for career receptions (1,313) touchdown receptions (110) and total reception yards (15,008) by a tight end.

Gonzalez was drafted in the first round out of University of California Berkley by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1997. He would be selected to his first bowl just two years later. He would be selected for the pro bowl for the next seven consecutive seasons. In 2007 he broke the career touchdown reception record for tight ends and in 2008 he broke the career receiving yards both previously held by Shannon Sharpe. He would be traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2010 where he would continue to amass records. He would become the first ever tight end with over 15,000 receiving yards.

Though Gonzalez never was able to reach a Super Bowl with either team, he has set many personal records and helped both the Chiefs and the Falcons to improve. Gonzalez will be a first ballot hall of famer in five years. There has never been a tight end quite like him.

Week 17 Predictions

New York Jets (7-8) vs Miami Dolphins (8-7)

Jets come in off a win last week against the Browns while the Dolphins come in off a loss against the Bills. Jets have been eliminated from playoff contention while the Dolphins are playing for the final playoff spot. This may be Rex Ryan’s final game with the Jets and would like to get a win for him, but the Dolphins at home have been a force to reckon with. Prediction: Dolphins

Houston Texans (2-13) vs Tennessee Titans (6-9)

One of only three games without any playoff implications. Texans come in off a loss last week against the Broncos while the Titans come in off a win against the Jaguars. Both teams will most likely be in search of a new head coach when the season is over and Titans will need to make significant moves involving Jake Locker, Kenny Britt and Chris Johnson during the off-season. Texans last win was in week 2 against the Titans but that was several months and injured reserve players ago. Prediction: Titans

Carolina Panthers (11-4) vs Atlanta Falcons (4-11)

Panthers come in off two straight wins while the Falcons come in off a loss last week to the 49ers. Panthers are playing for the NFC South title, the number one seed and a first round bye while the Falcons just hope to send the retiring TE Tony Gonzalez out on a high note. Falcons have the worse run game and the Panthers have the number 2 run defense which means relying heavily on Matt Ryan who has thrown a career worst 16 INTs. Even without WR Steve Smith the Panthers should be able to get the win. Prediction: Panthers

Cleveland Browns (4-11) vs Pittsburgh Steelers (7-8)

Browns come in off six straight losses while the Steelers come in off two straight wins. The Steelers are hanging onto the slimmest of hopes of making the playoffs but need this win and a lot of help to make that happen. Browns can only hope to play spoiler in what has been another disappointing season for the franchise. Prediction: Steelers

Washington Redskins (3-12) vs New York Giants (6-9)

Another game without any playoff implications. The Redskins come in off seven straight losses while the Giants come in off a surprising win against the Lions. This is only the Giants second losing season under Coughlin so should recover next season. Meanwhile the Redskins will be n search of a head coach in the off season and will desperately need to address their offensive line issues if they have any hopes of keeping QB RGIII as their franchise quarterback for years to come. Prediction: Giants

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-11) vs Indianapolis Colts (10-5)

The Jaguars come in off two straight losses while the Colts come in off two straight wins. Colts have won the AFC South and are playing for a very slim chance of scoring a first round bye. Colts have had some impressive wins this season and should make a good run in the playoffs. Jaguars will have to find a new quarterback in the off-season as they finish with the league worst scoring offense. Prediction: Colts

Detroit Lions (7-8) vs Minnesota Vikings (4-10-1)

This is another game without any playoff implications. The Lions come in off three straight losses while the Vikings come in off a loss last week against the Bengals. The Lions have lost five of their last six while the Vikings lost seven of their first eight putting both out of contention and in all likelihood, in search of a head coach this off-season. The Lions will also need to improve their offensive line, running game and secondary while the Vikings will need to quickly address their quarterback situation as QB Christian Ponder has been a major disappointment. Prediction: Lions

Baltimore Ravens (8-7) vs Cincinnati Bengals (10-5)

The Ravens come in off a loss last week against the Patriots while the Bengals come in off a win against the Vikings. Ravens need the win and a lot of help in order to claim the final playoff spot. The Bengals have locked up the AFC North title and are playing for the outside chance of winning a first round bye. Ravens QB Joe Flacco will be playing on an injured knee against a tough Bengals defense. Ravens are 2-5 on the road this season while the Bengals are undefeated at home. Prediction: Bengals

San Francisco 49ers (11-4) vs Arizona Cardinals (10-5)

49ers come in off five straight wins while the Cardinals come in off three straight wins. The 49ers have clinched a playoff berth and need help to gain the NFC West title and homefield advantage. Cardinals need a lot of help to make the playoffs even with a win. The 49ers have won seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams and hope to finish off the season strong. Prediction: 49ers
Kansas City Chiefs (11-4) vs San Diego Chargers (8-7)
The Chiefs come in off a loss last week against the Colts while the Chargers have won three straight. Chiefs are locked into the fifth seed in the AFC while Chargers need a win and a lot of help in order to get into the sixth and final playoff spot. Chiefs haven’t decided if they are going to rest their starters or not and Chargers have already won their first matchup. Prediction: Chiefs

St. Louis Rams (7-8) vs Seattle Seahawks (12-3)

Rams come in off two straight wins while the Seahawks come in off their first home loss in fifteen games. Seahawks are playing for a chance to win the NFC West title and homefield advantage. While the Seahawks have struggled on offense in recent weeks, the Rams haven’t won in Seattle since 2004 and may be without rookie WR Tavon Austin for the third consecutive game. Prediction: Seahawks

Buffalo Bills (6-9) vs New England Patriots (11-4)

The Bills come in off two straight wins while the Patriots come in off a win last week against the Ravens. Bills have long since been eliminated from playoff contention, so the Patriots are playing for the number two seed and a first round bye after securing the AFC East title last week. Patriots have won 12 straight home matchups against the Bills. Bills will be starting QB Thad Lewis as EJ Manuel is still dealing with a swollen left knee. Prediction: Patriots

Green Bay Packers (7-7-1) vs Chicago Bears (8-7)

Both teams come in off losses last week. The winner of this game will win the NFC North. Packers will have QB Aaron Rodgers back this week and possibly WR Randall Cobb as well. Bears QB Jay Cutler has a 1-8 record against the Packers. Bears won the first matchup between the two teams and hope to sweep them for the first time in six seasons. Prediction: Packers

Denver Broncos (12-3) vs Oakland Raiders (4-11)

Broncos come in off a win last week against the Texans while the Raiders come in off five straigt losses. The Broncos have been decimated by injuries with LB Von Miller, WR Wes Welker, S Rahim Moore, & DL Kevin Vickerson & Derek Wolfe all out due to injuries. The AFC West champions are playing for homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Raiders will have QB Terrelle Pryor back this after being out five weeks with a knee injury. Raiders have not beaten the Broncos in three seasons and will miss the playoffs for the 11th straight season. Prediction: Broncos

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-11) vs New Orleans Saints (10-5)

Both teams come in off two straight losses. Saints are playing to make the playoffs and potentially win the NFC South. Bucs will start QB Mike Glennon again who had won four out of five before losing the last two games. Saints have struggled offensively the last two weeks and this week will be without S Kenny Vaccaro with a broken ankle. Bucs will need to improve their offense in the off-season. Prediction: Saints

Philadelphia Eagles (9-6) vs Dallas Cowboys (8-7)

Both teams come in off wins last week and both are playing for the NFC East title and a playoff spot. Only one team will make the playoffs. The Cowboys will be without QB Tony Romo who is out with a herniated disk. The team will have to rally behind QB Kyle Orton who hasn’t started a game since 2011.  Eagles starting QB Nick Foles struggled in the last contest between these two teams but has thrown for 22 TDs and just 2 INTs in his nine starts. Prediction: Eagles

Conversation with Lawrence Jackson

This morning I woke up and checked my twitter and noticed Lawrence Jackson was having a long discussion about football with fans. I jumped into the fray and what proceeded was a 35 minute conversation back and forth about the Detroit Lions.

Now for those who may not know who Jackson is, let me bring you up to speed. Jackson was a first round draft pick in 2008 coming out of the University of Southern California. Jackson had an impressive college career so his selection as the 28th pick overall by the Seattle Seahawks was not a surprise.

He played one disappointing season for the Seahawks before being traded to the Detroit Lions. He had one good season with the Lions followed by two substandard seasons. He was signed with the Minnesota Vikings at the start of the 2013 season but did not make final cutdowns. Jackson has since decided to retire from the NFL stating he no longer wished to subject himself to the potential of long term brain injury.

With this background, Jackson has inside knowledge of the NFL and is very open with his feelings and opinions of the league, players, coaches and teams he once played for.

With the Lions being eliminated last night in an overtime game to the Giants, Jackson had a lot to say to the fans of the Lions.

The following is the exchange that we had about the Lions:

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 “@thenflgirl320: @LoJackson94 so is ur suggestion a new gm AND a new coaching staff?”unfortunately yes although gun is a great coach.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 the fact is that there hasn't been progress. It's been shiny but shoddy at best. In business, the leader suffers. That's Jim.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 to be fair to @jschwartzlions it's not all on him. He got the groceries and had to cook the meal. He's a solid coach.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 just like Belichick had to suffer a few setbacks & get fired. There's still hope for Jim. I think he can say he learned a lot

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 it hasn't been perfect for @jschwartzlions but he tries hard to do it the right way. It just hasn't worked out for him.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 the playoff year wasn't repeatable. Beating someone once isn't good enough. Knowing how to beat them over and over is key

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320 @LoJackson94 but that won't help their struggling offense..Gruden would b good for Stafford but I don't see him walking into this mess

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 lol they're about to be deep in cap jail, not a lot of people jumping for the opportunity.

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320 @LoJackson94 agreed..what about going after Seahawks OC Bevell or Broncos OC Gase?

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 if they're hiring to build around stafford yes. But a run game and solid defense always wins. I'd take a defensive coach.

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320 @LoJackson94 Id like to see the lions get Lovie Smith..look what he was able to do w/cutler when he came over from the broncos w/same issues

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 either way it goes Stafford needs to make guys into receivers and live off the deep passes to Calvin. That's fantasy.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 Flacco is the lead dog in the category of big arms

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 “@thenflgirl320: @LoJackson94 $120M big arm? I don't see it”flacco has zip, accuracy, touch and shown ability to not make a mistake

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320  @LoJackson94 this season has not been a reflection of that..he was 22/10 TD to INT & 18/19 this season w/same running game but losing Boldin

As you see Jackson has a lot to say and while what he say may not be welcome to many Lions fans (he was bombarded with a lot of negativity while we were tweeting back and forth), the fact remains that much of what he says about the Lions is true. This is a team in need of direction, discipline and leadership that can help guide and mold Stafford into the type of leader that the Lions will need far into the future if they ever hope to make the playoffs again. Whether or not anyone will listen to Jackson’s opinions and move in that direction is doubtful, but it would be very welcome in a city desperate for a Lombardi trophy.

Week 16 Picks

Miami Dolphins (8-6) vs Buffalo Bills (5-9)

Dolphins won their last three straight while the Bills won last week against the dismal Jaguars. Dolphins are in control of their own destiny and need this win to help propel them into the playoffs. While they have been plagued by controversy this season, the team has played pretty well without any big name stars on their roster. QB Ryan Tannehill has an overall QB rating of 86.6 having thrown 23 TDs. Meanwhile the Bills will be without starting QB EJ Manuel who is still suffering from swelling on his left knee. This injury has plagued him all season and with the production numbers of the rest of his offense down because of it, this team will struggle through their final games. Bills won their earlier matchup so expect the Dolphins to win this one. Prediction: Dolphins

New Orleans Saints (10-4) vs Carolina Panthers (10-4)

The Saints come in off a surprising loss against the Rams while the Panthers come in off a win against the Giants. If the Saints win they clinch the NFC South, the number 2 seed and a first round bye. With a loss the Panthers will have the same opportunity in Week 17. The Saints have loss two out of their last three while the Panthers have won two out of their last three. These teams are pretty evenly matched with both having a prolific offense and a struggling defense. With Saints having won the last matchup, the Panthers should win this one at home. Prediction: Panthers

Dallas Cowboys (7-7) vs Washington Redskins (3-11)

Cowboys come in off three straight losses while the Redskins come in off two straight losses. The Redskins have ended QB RGIII's season in hopes to conserve him for next year giving QB Kirk Cousins the opportunity to make his second start. The Redskins will have to spend their offseason addressing their issues on both the offensive and defensive lines if they have any hope of improving their future. They will look to try to play spoiler this week at home against the Cowboys who have also struggled with issues on their offense and defense. Cowboys have been plagued with injuries at key positions all season long which has contributed heavily to their season woes. Despite this fact, they are only one game out of first place and still have a chance to make the playoffs. Prediction: Cowboys

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-10) vs St. Louis Rams (6-8)

The Bucs come in off a loss against the 49ers while the Rams come in off a win against the Saints. The Bucs have had a terrible season with the inconsistent play at quarterback being a major factor in their woes. The Rams have struggled for the same reason after QB Sam Bradford was put on injured reserve early in the season. Neither team will make the playoffs but the Rams can pull out a .500 season with this win. Prediction: Rams

Cleveland Browns (4-10) vs New York Jets (6-8)

Browns come in off five straight losses while the Jets come in off a loss last week against the Panthers. Browns have not been able to find a reliable healthy quarterback to play for them all season and have a horrible running game. The Jets have been inconsistent at best and deplorable at worse with QB Geno Smith unable to win back to back games all season. The quarterback and receiver issue will have to be addressed this offseason. Prediction: Jets

Indianapolis Colts (9-5) vs Kansas City Chiefs (11-3)

The Colts come in off a win against the lowly Texans while the Chiefs are the winner of two straight though both against sub .500 teams. Both of these teams are in the playoffs and are playing for a chance to earn a first round bye. Chiefs have had a soft schedule this season and dropped three in a row against teams that were more evenly matched with them. This team has made a miraculous turn around from last season when they finished 2-14 but have faced very few teams above .500 which inflates there numbers. This game against the Colts will be another test against how good of a team they really are. Colts have soundly beaten the teams in their division but have struggled against better teams in stronger divisions. The loss of Reggie Wayne early in the season proved to be more costly than anticipated but the Colts biggest woes have been on defense. This game should be the highlight matchup of the weekend with playoff implications for both teams. Prediction: Chiefs

Minnesota Vikings (4-9-1) vs Cincinnati Bengals (9-5)

The Vikings come in off a surprising win against the Eagles while the Bengals come in off a loss against the Steelers. Bengals are in control of their playoff destiny. Last week was their first loss in a month and a win this week would keep them undefeated at home this season. A win Sunday would secure them a playoff berth and the AFC North title. The Vikings season has been deplorable brought about by the atrocious play at quarterback. Christian Ponder will most likely not be back next season as he has been relegated to the backup role and proved ineffective as a starter. QB Matt Cassel has given the team some hope but it is on the legs of RB Adrian Peterson that the Vikings have eeked out the few wins they have this season. Prediction: Bengals

Denver Broncos (11-3) vs Houston Texans (2-12)

Broncos come in off a surprising loss against the Chargers while the Texans have lost 12 straight games. The Broncos can clinch the division title, the number one seed and a first round bye with a win this week. This will be difficult in the face of numerous injuries on defense. The Broncos may the most prolific offense but their defense has been suspect and plagued with insurmountable injuries all season. Texans have had to overcome numerous injuries on both sides of the ball which led them to fall completely off and to the firing of their head coach. They will have issues on both sides of the ball and in coaching once the season is over. Prediction: Broncos

Tennessee Titans (5-9) vs Jacksonville Jaguars (4-10)

Titans come in off three straight losses while the Jags come in off a loss last week against the Bills. These are two terrible teams in desperate need of help on offense. Titans have been without QB Jake Locker since November and with Fitzpatrick playing inconsistent and RB Chris Johnson not producing, this season has been a total loss for them. They will need to make serious changes in the off season if they ever have hopes to return to a playoff caliber team. Jags won three straight before losing last week, but still have not found the big play quarterback they need to take them to the next level. The suspension of WR Justin Blackmon early in the season proved to be their undoing and now with WR Cecil Shorts III out this team will have a tough time winning their last two games. Prediction: Titans

Arizona Cardinals (9-5) vs Seattle Seahawks (12-2)

Cardinals come in off two straight wins while the Seahawks come in off a win last week against the Giants. The Cardinals have found a more reliable quarterback with QB Carson Palmer this season but the addition of RB Rashard Mendenhall has been the best acquisition on their offense. The Cards still have a chance to make the playoffs with a win this week but will have a tough game ahead. The Seahawks managed to bounce back last week after a shocking loss to the 49ers the week before. They have the best record in the league and the best defense. They are unbeatable at home. Prediction: Seahawks

New York Giants (5-9) vs Detroit Lions (7-7)

Both the Giants and the Lions come in off two straight losses with the Lions clinging to a fading hope of still making the playoffs. QB Eli Manning has thrown 25 INTs this season and lacks an offensive line to keep him from being sacked (he's been sacked 36 times this season). They will need to make major changes in the offseason. Lions are a consistently mediocre .500 team. Their defense keeps them on a losing track by costing them points at the end of games. Whoever controls the turnover battle will win this game. Prediction: Lions

New England Patriots (10-4) vs Baltimore Ravens (8-6)

Patriots come in off a loss last week to the Dolphins in Miami while the Ravens come in off four straight wins. A win this week for the Patriots ensures them the AFC East title. The Ravens need a little more help to make it into the playoffs. The Pats have a firm hold of the AFC East and an impressive list of wins this season. They have been reliable on both sides of the ball only finding some struggles on special teams. Ravens have not had great production out of RB Ray Rice this season and after signing a $100M contract in the off-season, Flacco's numbers have been unimpressive. This team is especially disappointing on defense. Prediction: Patriots

Pittsburgh Steelers (6-8) vs Green Bay Packers (7-6-1)

Steelers come  in off a win against the Bengals last week while the Packers are the owners of two straight. Steelers have sruggled all season after losing C Maurkice Pouncey in the first game of the season. That loss left the Steelers having to scramble to find a reliable player to fill the position and resulted in QB Ben Roethlisberger being sacked 40 times this season. This season is a bust for them so a win or loss will not matter at this point. Packers still have a slim hope of making the playoffs and need this win to insure it. QB Aaron Rodgers is questionable to return this week but Matt Flynn has filled the role well in his absence. Prediction: Packers

Oakland Raiders (4-10) vs San Diego Chargers (7-7)

Raiders come in off four straight losses while the Chargers come in off a win against the Broncos. While the Raiders have no hope for post season play, the Chargers hang onto a narrow chance. With both starting WRs out for the Raiders the team will find it hard to win even with QB Matt McGloin starting. Chargers have struggled when they lost their starting receivers and LB Dwight Freeney early in the season, but impressive wins against the Chiefs and Broncos give them hope to make a playoff push. Prediction: Chargers

Chicago Bears (8-6) vs Philadelphia Eagles (8-6)

The Bears come in off two straight wins while the Eagles come in off a loss. Both of these teams can lock up their division with a win Sunday night so both teams need the win. Both teams have played very well down the stretch. This game should be a great matchup. Prediction: Eagles

Atlanta Falcons (4-10) vs San Francisco 49ers (10-4)

Falcons come in off a win last week against the Redskins while the 49ers have won four straight. 49ers can clinch the playoffs with a win this game. Falcons were decimated early in the season by injuries and never recovered from the numerous losses. The 49ers biggest adversary is in their own division and should easily beat the badly beaten Falcons. Prediction: 49ers

Thursday, November 28, 2013

Week 13 Picks

Green Bay Packers (5-5-1) vs Detroit Lions (6-5)

Packers come in off a tie last week after losing two straight. QB Aaron Rodgers is still out with a broken left collarbone leaving Matt Flynn to start this week. Lions come in off two straight losses. The NFC North has become the most up for grabs division. This game will decide the division leader. Prediction: Lions

Oakland Raiders (4-7) vs Dallas Cowboys (6-5)

Raiders come in off a loss against the Titans last week at home. QB Matt McGloin struggled last week throwing 1 TD and 1 INT. If he struggles today the Raiders may be forced to switch to Terrelle Pryor. RB Darren McFadden is still struggling with a knee injury and will not get the start today. This is a team struggling in a division dominated by two teams. Cowboys come in off a win last week against the Giants in New York. Despite the win the Cowboys have struggled on both sides of the ball with a banged up team all season. They look to take a firm lead of the NFC East division. Prediction: Cowboys

Pittsburgh Steelers (5-6) vs Baltimore Ravens (5-6)

Ravens come in off a win last week against the Jets at home. QB Joe Flacco is 5-6 all time against the Steelers and has thrown as many TDs as INTs this season (14). The running game has struggled this season and the defense has been a major letdown. Steelers come in off three straight wins. This team has struggled on offense since losing C Maurkice Pouncey in the season opener. Rookie RB Le'veon Bell will get the start today though he has not scored a TD in the last two weeks. Prediction: Steelers

Tennessee Titans (5-6) vs Indianapolis Colts (7-4)

Titans come in off a win against Oakland while Indianapolis come in off a loss against Arizona. Titans have had an inconsistent season marred by the loss of QB Jake Locker. RB Chris Johnson has not had the numbers needed to overcome that loss. Colts have looked pitiful in the losses against the Rams and Cardinals. The loss of WR Reggie Wayne has been costly for the Colts. These teams need the win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Prediction: Colts

Jacksonville Jaguars (2-9) vs Cleveland Browns (4-7)

Jaguars come in off a win against the Texans while the Browns come in off a loss against the Steelers. Patriots come in off an overtime win against the Broncos last week at home while the Texans are on a nine game losing streak. Chicago Bears (6-5) vs Minnesota Vikings (2-8-1)

Bears come in off a loss last week against Rams in St. Louis while Vikings come in off a tie against the Packers in Green Bay. Bears have managed to scrape together wins with QB Josh McCown but will need Jay Cutler back soon to make a push into the playoffs. Their biggest issue to overcome is having the worst run defense in the league. Vikings have been plagued all season by the inconsistency at the QB position no matter who has started. They rely to heavily on their running game and a defense that has had to constantly come from behind. Prediction: Bears

Arizona Cardinals (7-4) vs Philadelphia Eagles (6-5)

Cardinals come in off a four game winning streak while the Eagles come in off a bye after winning three straight. QB Carson Palmer has been a key figure in keeping the Cardinals in the playoff hunt and their defense finally found a way to beat top contenders last week against the Colts. Prediction: Cardinals

Indianapolis Colts (7-3) vs Arizona Cardinals (6-4)

Colts come in off a win last week against the Titans while the Cardinals are on a three game winning streak. The loss of WR Reggie Wayne was huge for the Colts but they have overcome it. Cardinals meanwhile have been able to find wins behind their running game. Prediction: Colts

Dallas Cowboys (5-5) vs New York Giants (4-6)

Cowboys come in off their bye last week while the Giants have won four straight. Cowboys have the leagues worst defense which has repeatedly cost them key games this season. Giants have finally been able to find a way to win despite their offensive struggles. Prediction: Giants

Denver Broncos (9-1) vs New England Patriots (7-3)

Broncos come in off a win last week against the Chiefs while the Patriots come in off a controversial loss. Broncos have the number one ranked offense in the league but their defense especially their secondary have kept games closer than necessary. The loss of S Raheem Moore will be a test for them. Meanwhile Patriots remain two games ahead in the AFC East division and have a powerful offense. Prediction: Broncos

San Francisco 49ers (6-4) vs Washington Redskins (3-7)

RB Chris Johnson has struggled in yardage this season and the defense has hemorrhaged yardage to opposing offenses. Prediction: Colts

Cleveland Browns (4-5) vs Cincinnati Bengals (6-4)

Browns may be a sub .500 team but these two divisional rivals always play each other tough and always split during the season. Browns come in off their bye last week while the Bengals have lost the last two in a row. Browns won the last matchup so expect the Bengals to win this one. Prediction: Bengals

Oakland Raiders (3-6) vs Houston Texans (2-7)

Welcome to the backup quarterback bowl. These two teams have played atrocious all season and both find themselves without their starting quarterback. New England Patriots (7-2) vs Carolina Panthers (6-3)

The Patriots come in off a bye last week while the Panthers have won five straight. Patriots offense is high powered, but Carolina has one of the stingiest defenses in the league. This will be a better game than many may expect. Prediction: Patriots

Bullying in the NFL

As the story Jonathan Martin/Richie Icognito continues to unfold in the media everyday, the culture of the NFL has suddenly become front and center for the public to scrutinize, and what the public is learning is ugly.

Rookie hazing has been an accepted practice in the NFL. Every year the head shaving, ice baths and stories of rookies being stuck with exorbitant restaurant and bar tabs are played on every sports media outlet. In years have past we would look at these things with a passing glance and occasionally laugh at the ridiculous hair cuts or duct taped rookies on a goal post, but now as the truth of just how far some rookie hazing goes starts to come to light, it is being discovered that these lighthearted pranks go a lot further than the minor pranks we previously were told and shown.

What is the line between simple hazing and bullying or is this a distinction without a difference? What one person may find as acceptable and normal another person may find offensive and rude. What one person may accept another person, as in the case with Martin, may think has gone too far.

Football is a sport deeply rooted in the hegemonic masculinity of our American culture. We have grown up hearing the saying "boys will be boys" as a reason to excuse bad behavior among males. We believe men should "man up" when facing difficulties because "boys don't cry". We expect men to be strong, brave, unemotional and detached and when someone fails to fit into that accepted frame, we accuse them of being "soft".

Repeatedly as this story has been told, the accusations are that Martin is too soft and he needed to man up and knock Icognito out instead of running away. Forget the fact that Icognito had the backing of all his teammates and coaches, Martin was wrong for taking the issue to the media. The media questions his mental stability and refers back to his emotional state, rather than seeing someone fed up with a hostile work environment finally walking away. It is Martin who is seen as wrong, not Incognito. In fact, Incognito's teammates have come to his defense and blame Martin for bringing negative attention to their team.

As the Martin case continues to be revealed, more players are coming forward to admit to  being bullied during their rookie days in the league. Former Saints player Cam Cleeland recently came forward to admit he was nearly blinded by a hazing incident during his rookie season with the Saints. The admission by he and other NFL players shows that the hazing practice is widespread and prevalent throughout all of the teams.

Martin has now sued the Dolphins for the actions of Incognito and other players but also for the inaction of coaches and managers to stop the hazing from happening. And with hazing being almost a daily topic as more and more players come forward and more and more details emerging, the NFL can no longer bare silent witness to the behavior. They will be forced to take some type of action to prevent such behavior from occurring again in the future. Otherwise the suit against the Dolphins will be the first of many more for years to come.

The Tragic Death of Paul Oliver

In the wake of the ongoing concussion study comes news that another former NFL player has committed suicide. Former San Diego Chargers safety Paul Oliver died Tuesday night of a self inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Marietta, Ga. The 29 year old hadn't played professionally since 2011. He was originally drafted in the fourth-round of the 2007 supplemental draft and had his best year with the Chargers in 2010.

What makes this case even sadder is that this is the second suicide of a former Charger in a year. Junior Seau committed suicide in May 2012.

The suicide rate among former NFL players is nearly six times the national average. To date there are 24 known suicides of former players. Many of these suicides have been a direct result of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease typically caused by multiple hits to the head. While it is too early to determine if this is what caused Oliver's death the fact remains that the rate of suicide in the NFL is alarming.

The question becomes, what is the NFL doing to help former players deal with no longer playing? For many the loss of income, playing, competitive edge, teamwork, etc is overwhelming and deeply depressing. How do you teach these people to cope with the transition from professional athlete to everyday citizen? What obligation does the NFL have to help them?

For current players, what help is there for someone suffering from depression? The sad fact is some of these suicides like OJ Murdock or Javon Belcher could have possibly been prevented had they received help from their teams or from the league. In a culture deeply rooted in manliness though, can a player admit he needs mental help? When players who take too long recovering from an injury are accused of being soft and told to "man up", how can someone like Oliver or Seau or Kenny McKinnley even reach out and ask for help when they are suffering from mental illness?

We live in a society that still sees mental illness as taboo. A broken leg or a torn ACL we can comprehend but clinical depression or social anxiety disorder we cannot understand. We think it's all in someone's head and they need to just "get over it". It's not as simple as just "getting over it", people need help. A therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc to talk to and help them deal with their issues. With the lack of financial help former players get, how can any of them hope to afford to get the help many of them may desperately need? How can current players ask for a break to deal with a mental rather than a physical breakdown?

The suicide epidemic in the NFL cannot be ignored. It is something the NFL must deal with. It has an obligation to help those who have sacrificed so much in the name of the sport.

Is this the end of Tim Tebow?

When New England Patriots made their final cuts to get to their 53 man roster, Tim Tebow was a name no one was shocked to see cut from the team. While many Tebow supporters were disappointed to see him not make a team, the move was not a big surprise. His few appearances during preseason were not that memorable. While he had a few flashes of brilliance, for the most part Tebow showed why he has not been a credible threat to overtake a starting quarterback position for any team with a good quarterback. His lackluster performances this preseason may have sealed his NFL fate.

Was Tebow given a fair shake in the NFL? Let's go back a ways and make a case. Tebow was a good not great quarterback in his days at Florida. While he did win a national championship and a Heisman during his time there, his skills were often hidden behind the fact that he had great receivers and a good running game. Tebow was never an under center type quarterback. He was a shotgun quarterback who could make the deep passes, but when hurried by a good defense often made poor decisions and many mistakes. He could win on spectacular last minute plays or lose on simple bad passes. He could scramble for the first down or throw the interception on the final drive. This was the duality of Tebow.

When draft time came, many analysts expected him to be a second or third round selection. He was good not great and could cost you a game as easily as he could win you one. He is a nice man but nice doesn't win you games so don't draft him if you didn't plan to spend a couple of years investing time into developing him into a NFL level quarterback. Much to everyone's shock the Denver Broncos drafted Tebow in the first round.

Tebow's time in Denver was much the same as at Florida. Flashes of greatness mixed with moments of indecisiveness and poorly thrown passes. In practice he completed less than 50 percent of his passes. In games the percentage was often lower. Somehow each week when he started though he would will the Broncos to a win. He even managed to get a playoff win, but his would not be enough to save him a job when the Broncos signed Peyton Manning. He was quickly shipped off to the Jets.

Tebow's time with Jets would prove to be disastrous. Never given the opportunity to start, his few playing moments came when Sanchez would have a terrible game or was injured. Often he had to try to bring the team back from behind. Again he had moments of greatness, but for the most part he was relegated to a clipboard on the sideline. He was cut from the Jets at the beginning of training cap this season when they drafted Geno Smith.

New England would be his next and final stop. People had hoped he would move to tight end as the Patriots were in need of a tight end after cutting Hernandez and an injured Gronkowski unable to play. He never played that position and the few times he did play in preseason showed the Patriots nothing worth keeping him as even a third stringer.

There are those who suggest Tebow go play in the CFL, in Europe or even in Arena League, but he is determined to make it in the NFL. If a team suffers an injury to their starting quarterback and is in need of a back up to their back up he may get a chance, but at this point it seems that ship has sailed and the Tebow era in the NFL may finally have ended.

The Cons of Training Camp-Key Losses to players before the season even begins

Training camp for all 32 teams began last week and already several teams have lost some valuable players for the season. The Baltimore Ravens lost TE Dennis Pitta for the season with a fractured hip. Denver Broncos lost C Dan Koppen for the season with a torn ACL. New York Jets lost CB Aaron Berry for the season with a torn ACL.

With so many injuries just days into training camp, questions arise on the health and safety on the athletes as well as what is too much training. Many football players come into training camp out of shape. They risk injuries and in extreme cases death. While a death in training camp has not happened in more than a decade, it is still a potential threat especially with players topping the scales at over 300 pounds and working out in extreme weather conditions. Extra weight only compounds this problem even more.

The offseason now is much shorter than in decades past. After the Super Bowl in January, players weren't due back for training camp until July which gave them a six month break. Nowadays the Super Bowl occurs in February with the draft occurring in April and players due for organized team activities (commonly referred to as OTAs) beginning in May, minicamp beginning in June and training camp in July. This gives some teams only a three month break. Players need to stay in an all most year round condition or find themselves suffering training camp and early season injuries. Are these injuries a result of poor conditioning or a lack of rest? If players in years past were able to sustain less injuries with less training, why is more training and more preseason games mandatory? You risk losing essential players before a single game is played.

The four preseason games system has been under scrutiny for many years as well. Before the signing of the last collective bargaining agreement, owners wished to add on two additional preseason games (which was voted down by the Players Association) while many players have always wished to cut the preseason to just two games. Every year when a player suffers a training camp or preseason injury, the same questions arise again and again. There is no full proof system that will guarantee player safety and insure that no player will not be injured prior to the beginning of the season, but a solution must be reached. A team should not have their possible playoff contention removed prior to the first snap of the season.

The Jets QB Controversy

After bringing in Tim Tebow last season to in theory bolster their offense, Jets fell to a dismal 6-10 behind the lackluster play of Mark Sanchez. This season Jets drafted QB Geno Smith in the second round once again bringing about another quarterback controversy.

Sanchez had a remarkable first two seasons, but since then his numbers and completion percentage have declined each year. The last season became most notorious for the "butt fumble." While Rex Ryan had in previous years defended his quarterback, this year the reality is that Smith may get the nod over Sanchez. Smith is a flashy quarterback. In his four years at West Virginia he completed 988 of 1465 passes for 11,662 yards, 98 TDs and 21 INTs. This is in stark contrast to Sanchez who was the starting quarterback for only one season at USC before declaring for the NFL draft. His lack of college experience and his recent failings under center may force the Jets to move on.

As of now Ryan refuses to commit to either quarterback advising the position is up for grabs at this point. Neither Sanchez nor Smith have had standout performances in training camp thus far leaving the Jets without a clear starter. They cannot rotate the two quarterbacks in and out without potentially causing confusion to the offense and to each quarterback. This proved disastrous for the Jets last season in a match up against the Steelers when a slumping Sanchez was replaced by Tebow for two plays only to be brought back in; Jets loss the game 27-10.

With Ryan on the hot seat this season, he cannot afford another season of poor performance and double digit losses. A decision must be made for the present and future of the Jets.

Photo Page-Super Bowl XLVII

In 2013 I went to the Super Bowl in New Orleans. It was the most amazing experience. I saw many current and former NFL players and got to enjoy a great game despite the blackout just after half time. It was weird to sit in the dark inside the stadium but how many people get to have the experience of being at the Super Bowl?
