Conversation with Lawrence Jackson

This morning I woke up and checked my twitter and noticed Lawrence Jackson was having a long discussion about football with fans. I jumped into the fray and what proceeded was a 35 minute conversation back and forth about the Detroit Lions.

Now for those who may not know who Jackson is, let me bring you up to speed. Jackson was a first round draft pick in 2008 coming out of the University of Southern California. Jackson had an impressive college career so his selection as the 28th pick overall by the Seattle Seahawks was not a surprise.

He played one disappointing season for the Seahawks before being traded to the Detroit Lions. He had one good season with the Lions followed by two substandard seasons. He was signed with the Minnesota Vikings at the start of the 2013 season but did not make final cutdowns. Jackson has since decided to retire from the NFL stating he no longer wished to subject himself to the potential of long term brain injury.

With this background, Jackson has inside knowledge of the NFL and is very open with his feelings and opinions of the league, players, coaches and teams he once played for.

With the Lions being eliminated last night in an overtime game to the Giants, Jackson had a lot to say to the fans of the Lions.

The following is the exchange that we had about the Lions:

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 “@thenflgirl320: @LoJackson94 so is ur suggestion a new gm AND a new coaching staff?”unfortunately yes although gun is a great coach.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 the fact is that there hasn't been progress. It's been shiny but shoddy at best. In business, the leader suffers. That's Jim.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 to be fair to @jschwartzlions it's not all on him. He got the groceries and had to cook the meal. He's a solid coach.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 just like Belichick had to suffer a few setbacks & get fired. There's still hope for Jim. I think he can say he learned a lot

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 it hasn't been perfect for @jschwartzlions but he tries hard to do it the right way. It just hasn't worked out for him.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 the playoff year wasn't repeatable. Beating someone once isn't good enough. Knowing how to beat them over and over is key

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320 @LoJackson94 but that won't help their struggling offense..Gruden would b good for Stafford but I don't see him walking into this mess

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 lol they're about to be deep in cap jail, not a lot of people jumping for the opportunity.

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320 @LoJackson94 agreed..what about going after Seahawks OC Bevell or Broncos OC Gase?

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 if they're hiring to build around stafford yes. But a run game and solid defense always wins. I'd take a defensive coach.

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320 @LoJackson94 Id like to see the lions get Lovie Smith..look what he was able to do w/cutler when he came over from the broncos w/same issues

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 either way it goes Stafford needs to make guys into receivers and live off the deep passes to Calvin. That's fantasy.

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 @thenflgirl320 Flacco is the lead dog in the category of big arms

Lawrence Jackson ‏@LoJackson94 “@thenflgirl320: @LoJackson94 $120M big arm? I don't see it”flacco has zip, accuracy, touch and shown ability to not make a mistake

NFL GIRL ‏@thenflgirl320  @LoJackson94 this season has not been a reflection of that..he was 22/10 TD to INT & 18/19 this season w/same running game but losing Boldin

As you see Jackson has a lot to say and while what he say may not be welcome to many Lions fans (he was bombarded with a lot of negativity while we were tweeting back and forth), the fact remains that much of what he says about the Lions is true. This is a team in need of direction, discipline and leadership that can help guide and mold Stafford into the type of leader that the Lions will need far into the future if they ever hope to make the playoffs again. Whether or not anyone will listen to Jackson’s opinions and move in that direction is doubtful, but it would be very welcome in a city desperate for a Lombardi trophy.
