NFLPA appeals Ray Rice suspension

The NFL Players' Association appealed Ray Rice's indefinite suspension Tuesday night.

Rice was originally given a two game suspension in July for violating the league's personal conduct policy for a physical altercation involving his then-fiancé Jenay Palmer in a casino elevator in February.

On September 8 a video surfaced showing the actual violent confrontation. Within hours, the Ravens released Rice and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell extended the suspension to indefinite based on the "new evidence." Both the Ravens and the league denied having seen the video prior to the release by TMZ Sports on Sept. 8.

The NFLPA released a statement regarding the appeal:

Today, the NFL Players Association formally filed an appeal of the indefinite suspension of Ray Rice by the NFL. This action taken by our union is to protect the due process rights of all NFL players.
The NFLPA appeal is based on supporting facts that reveal a lack of a fair and impartial process, including the role of the office of the Commissioner of the NFL. We have asked that a neutral and jointly selected arbitrator hear this case as the Commissioner and his staff will be essential witnesses in the proceeding and thus cannot serve as impartial arbitrators.

-- NFL Players Association
Additional information on this matter:
·       The terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement require a hearing date to be set within 10 days of this appeal notice.
·       Under governing labor law, an employee cannot be punished twice for the same action when all of the relevant facts were available to the employer at the time of the first punishment.
·       The hearing will require a neutral arbitrator to determine what information was available to the NFL and when it was available.

Both the NFL and players' association agree that Rice will remain suspended indefinitely while the appeal is resolved.

Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis on Short Term IR

The Jaguars have placed tight end Marcedes Lewis on injured reserve/designated to return because of the high ankle sprain he suffered during the team's 41-10 loss to Washington on Sunday.

Lewis cannot practice for six weeks and is not eligible to return to the active roster until two weeks after that making him unavailable until Week 10 against the Cowboys.

Jaguars promoted undrafted rookie Marcel Jensen from the practice squad to fill the void left by Lewis. They also have Clay Harbor and Mickey Shuler.

Bears CB Charles Tillman Out For the Season

The season is over for Charles Tillman. According to some, so may be his career.

Chicago Bears placed their veteran cornerback on season-ending injured reserve with a ruptured triceps muscle.

Tillman sustained the injury when he appeared to become tangled up with a 49ers player near the sideline during the third quarter of the Bears' 28-20 victory against San Francisco on Sunday night.

Tillman leads the NFL with 42 forced fumbles and 30 interceptions since 2003. The 12 year veteran is a two time Pro Bowl selection and ranks third in Bears history with 36 interceptions. He leads the franchise in career interception return yardage (675), interception return touchdowns (8) and defensive return touchdowns (9).

In a statement released Monday Tillman stated that retirement is not on his mind and that he will return to the team in 2015. He is a respected leader on the Bears team and his presence will be missed in the secondary.

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson indicted on child abuse

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has found himself in legal trouble that may cost him both on and off the field.
Peterson has been indicted in Texas on charges of child abuse after using a tree branch to spank his son. Vikings responded swiftly to the charges by deactivating the star rusher for this Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Peterson's attorney, Rusty Hardin, said Friday that the charge in Montgomery County accuses Peterson of using a branch, or switch, to spank one of his sons, but that the young athlete meant no harm and was cooperating with authorities.

The NFL didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Peterson's situation.

Companies Quick to Sever Ties With Ray Rice

The fallout of the elevator surveillance video released by TMZ Sports on Monday continues for the embattled Ray Rice.

After being cut by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL, several companies have also cut ties with the former running back. Here is the latest:

The Baltimore Ravens are no longer selling Ray Rice jerseys on their official website. They are offering fans an exchange for their No. 27 jerseys at their stadium stores.

Rice jerseys were pulled off shelves at retailers Dick's Sporting Goods and Modell's on Monday and were no longer available for sale at the NFL Shop, the league's official online store.

No Idea Tavern and Hersh’s Pizza and Drinks, both in Baltimore, are offering free pizzas and $10 bar tabs if customers turn in their No. 27 Rice jerseys. Both will also donate $2.70 per jersey they receive to the House Of Ruth, a Maryland non-profit organization that helps women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Nike has terminated its endorsement contract with Ray Rice. VertiMax sports training equipment and BodyArmor sports drink also severed ties with him.

Rice also had been removed as a spokesman for East Coast-based M&T Bank (though this was done after the release of the initial video).

EA Sports announced via Twitter that it will remove Rice from its Madden NFL 15 game. The roster change update will happen on Friday.
Though this may not be the end of his career, the young athlete stands to lose $4 million in base salary from the Ravens as well as millions of dollars in lost endorsement deals. He will have an uphill battle to gain redemption in the eyes of the public and to play again for the NFL.

Pegulas Reach Agreement to Buy Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula are close to being the new owners of the Buffalo Bills.

NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that the couple had teached a tentative agreement.

The estate must get the approval of the NFL before the sale to the Pegulas can be completed. This could come within the next week.

The Pegulas would require approval from members of the NFL Finance Committee and would have to go through an extensive background check by an NFL-contracted security firm.

The final step would be approval from three-quarters of the league's 31 other owners, which could come as early as next month.

Under NFL regulations the Pegulas can own both the Sabres and the Bills since they are both in the same market.

The Pegulas were regarded as the front-runners to buy the Bills. They have owned the Sabres since 2011. They have a net worth of more than $3.5 billion and the support of local business leaders and public officials.

The Bills are up for sale after the original owner and founder Ralph Wilson died in March. The sale price is expected to exceed $1 billion.

The loss of Johnson is significant for the Chiefs. He is one of the leaders on the defense and his presence on the interior of the line is essential.

Josh Mauga and James-Michael Johnson will be used to replace Johnson this season.

Chiefs also signed former Denver Broncos defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson to replace DeVito. Vickerson is a seven year veteran who spent his last four seasons with the Broncos.

Vickerson was cut by the Broncos prior to the start of this season. He will not have the opportunity to face his former team on Sunday when the Chiefs face the Broncos in Denver.

Ray Rice Cut by Ravens; Suspended by the NFL

Just a week after announcing new guidelines on domestic violence suspensions, damning evidence against Ravens running back Ray Rice may have ended his career.

TMZ Sports released the elevator video footage of the assault committed by Ray Rice on his then fiancee'. The reaction on social media was swift and severe with many current and former players expressing their contempt for Rice and suggesting the league needed to do more to punish him.

Shortly following the reaction on social media, the Baltimore Ravens announced that they released the young star. This was followed shortly by the NFL suspending Rice indefinitely and banning all teams from contacting him.

The NFL and the Ravens were quick to defend their original punishment advising they were unaware of the severity of the assault on Rice's wife and that they had never seen the video that TMZ made public. Both were quick to change their reactions and punishments once new evidence came to light.

Rice may at some point return to the NFL since he was not banished from the league, however this would not be anytime soon. Rice will need to seek redemption, seek counseling and show remorse. He will have to become a spokesperson against domestic violence and show he is committed to the cause in order to ever have another chance in the league. As of right now his career is in jeopardy of being over at just 28.

Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney Out For 4-6 Weeks

Jadeveon Clowney has started his NFL career plagued by injuries.

The Texans star had sports hernia surgery in June and suffered concussion like symptoms during the preseason. He suffered his latest injury during the opening game of the season.

Clowney was injured late in the second quarter in Sunday's win over the Washington Redskins. He was hurt when he jumped up to try and bat down a pass.

The young athlete tore his meniscus and had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Monday. He will miss 4-6 weeks recovering.

He will be replaced by Whitney Mercilus in the Texans line up.

Giants G Geoff Schwartz on Temporary IR

The Giants have placed offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz on their temporary injured reserve list.

The veteran guard won't be available to play until Week 9.

Schwartz dislocated his right big toe in the Giants' preseason game against the Jets. He can't practice the first six weeks or play the first eight weeks.

With the Giants on bye in Week 8, Schwartz would be available to play in their Week 9 game against the Colts on Nov. 3.

Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence on short-term IR

With injuries and suspensions mounting, the woes for the Cowboys continue.

Cowboys placed rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence on their short term injured reserve list. Lawrence will not be available the first eight weeks of the season.

Cowboys traded up to get Lawrence early in the second round of the 2014 draft with the 34th pick overall. He was expected to replace DeMarcus Ware and make an immediate impact as an edge pass rusher. However, Lawrence broke his foot during a blocking play early in training camp and had to undergo surgery.

The Cowboys signed defensive lineman Jack Crawford to take Lawrence's spot on the roster. The 6-foot-5, 275 pound Crawford, who was cut by the Raiders last week, played in 19 games and had 18 tackles over two seasons for the Raiders. He is a defensive end who can also play tackle.

Cowboys Sign DE Michael Sam

Michael Sam has finally found a home in the NFL.

The Dallas Cowboys signed the defensive end to their practice squad. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett announced the signing on Wednesday.

With so many injuries to their defensive line, the Cowboys are in need of help, though Sam isn't likely to start for the team in their season opener.

Cowboys gave up the most yards of any team last season. They only had five sacks in the preseason and George Selvie, Terrell McClain, Henry Melton and DeMarcus Lawrence are all out with injuries.

Sam will wear number 46 on the practice squad but the number would change if he was activated to the Cowboys 53 man roster.

Any team can sign Sam off the Cowboys' practice squad, but would have to put him on the 53-man roster for a minimum of four weeks.

Family of Junior Seau to Reject Concussion Settlement

Relatives of former linebacker Junior Seau will reject a proposed settlement between the league and thousands of former players, a lawyer representing the family told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Tuesday.

The decision to "opt out" means the Seaus will proceed with a wrongful death lawsuit they filed in January 2013. That suit alleges that the NFL concealed the dangers of football-related head trauma over a period of several years. After his death, Seau was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a neurodegenerative disease that has been found in dozens of deceased NFL players.

Seaus' attorney Steven Strauss said Seau's family, including his four children, is "not suing for his pain and suffering. They're suing for their own. This settlement doesn't address that. Under the proposed settlement, relatives of some players found to have CTE qualify for compensation up to $4 million.

Strauss said he hoped other players might follow the Seau family's lead and opt out of the deal to force the two sides to negotiate a better deal.

It's also not clear how  and when Seau's case would be allowed to proceed back in California Superior Court in San Diego.

Josh Brent Reinstated Must Serve 10 game Suspension

Josh Brent is getting a second chance in the NFL, but not right away.

The NFL on Tuesday said Brent must serve a 10-game suspension and his return is conditional on staying out of legal trouble and "any prohibited alcohol-related conduct will likely result in an immediate suspension and potential banishment from the NFL."

Brent will be allowed to return to the Cowboys facility for team meetings and individual workouts starting in Week7 and can return to all team activities except traveling and playing beginning in Week 9.

If Brent cooperates with all the terms and any additional ones from the league's substance abuse program advisors, he will be considered for full reinstatement after Week 10.

Brent's agent said they would appeal the league's decision in hopes of having the length of the suspension reduced.

The Cowboys have been supportive of Brent throughout the process and Jerry Jones and several players have said they would welcome him back to the team.

Broncos WR Wes Welker Suspended

The Broncos were concerned about wide receiver Wes Welker starting on Sunday after suffering his third concussion in 10 months. Now the issue is moot as Welker has been suspended.

Welker has been suspended the first four games of the season for violating the league's performance enhancing drug policy. Sources say the drug was amphetamines.

The positive test came in May and was appealed. The appeal happened two weeks ago and parties were notified today that he lost the appeal.

Welker will miss games against Indianapolis, Kansas City, Seattle and Arizona. He will not make his season debut until Week 6 against the Jets in New York.

The four-game suspension for Welker will cost him $705,882 in base salary.

Colts Owner Jim Irsay Suspended & Fined

The NFL suspended Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay on Tuesday for six games and fined him $500,000 for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

The suspension comes as Irsay pleaded guilty in an Indiana court room on Tuesday to a misdemeanor account of driving while intoxicated.

Irsay was arrested on March 16 after an officer spotted him driving slowly, stopping in the roadway and failing to use a turn signal. Officers said he failed field sobriety tests.

Irsay admitted to a judge he was under the influence of the painkillers oxycodone and hydrocodone when he was arrested.

Irsay will be on probation for a year and is prohibited from drinking or possessing alcohol during that time. His driver's license also was suspended for one year.

Under the terms of his league suspension, Irsay cannot attend any games or practices and is not allowed to be present at the Colts' facility.  He is also barred from representing the Colts at any league-affiliated event, including league committee meetings.

Irsay is also forbidden from discussing the Colts or the NFL on his Twitter account.

The suspension takes effect at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Irsay will be eligible to return after Indianapolis' game against the Houston Texans on Oct. 9.

Texans Agree to Contract Extension With DE J.J. Watt

The Houston Texans and defensive end J.J. Watt have reached agreement on a six-year contract extension that will keep the young star with the team through 2021.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the deal is reportedly worth $100 million with $51.876 million guaranteed, the most guaranteed money paid to a defensive player in history.Watt was scheduled to make just $1.9 million in base salary this season.

Watt has been one of the most dominant defensive players in the league since being drafted by the Texans in 2011. He won defensive player of the year in 2012, is a two time Pro Bowler, and has amassed 217 tackles, 36.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles in his three years in the NFL.

Week 1 Predictions

Green Bay Packers vs Seattle Seahawks

Even with a healthy Eddie Lacy the Packers will have their work cut out for them in the season opener. Packers had more total yards and passing yards per game last season while the Seahawks had more rushing yards and the number one overall defense. The offseason saw the Seahawks lose some of their defensive players to free agency but keep the core together. They will be hard to beat at home. Prediction: Seahawks

New Orleans Saints vs Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons had a terrible season last year plagued by injuries and a weak offensive line. The off-season saw them make moves to improve their offensive and defensive lines. A healthy Steven Jackson also returns. The Saints finished with an 11-5 record last season and lost to the Seahawks in the second round of the playoffs. Drew Brees is one of the top quarterbacks in the league with the top tight end in Jimmy Graham in the league. Prediction: Saints

Buffalo Bills vs Chicago Bears

EJ Manuel started off well then struggled last season before being hurt. The only statistic the Bills led the Bears in last season was rushing yards and this was mainly due to Matt Forte being out part of the season. Manuel has struggled in the preseason and even with the Bills making improvements on their defense this team will have a rough 2014. Cutler has an overall passer rating of 86.4 with 112 INTs over his career. He has a solid running game in Forte and a top receiver in Brandon Marshall. Prediction: Bears

Tennessee Titans vs Kansas City Chiefs

Jake Locker is back healthy but Chris Johnson is no longer with the Titans. Locker has missed part of the last two seasons with injuries and has an overall passer rating of 81.1 over his three years in the league. Titans did make a move in free agency to improve their offense with the signing of tight end Delanie Walker and on defense with several additions on their d-line. The Chiefs will be without Bowe for the first game of the season but do have Jamaal Charles in the backfield healthy. The Chiefs finished 11-5 last season and just signed QB Alex Smith to a long term deal. Smith has fourth best win loss record in the league. Prediction: Chiefs

Minnesota Vikings vs St. Louis Rams

The Vikings quarterback issue was a major part of their downfall last season. This season they hope to have resolved the issue with a healthy Matt Cassel and rookie Teddy Bridgewater as back-up. Vikings have the best running back in the game with Adrian Peterson. They made moves to improve their secondary with the addition of Captain Munnerlyn at cornerback. Rams are already off to a bad start with the loss of quarterback Sam Bradford for the season. The addition of WR Kenny Britt should help QB Shaun Hill. The Rams still have a solid defense that should help to keep them competitive this season. Prediction: Vikings

New England Patriots vs Miami Dolphins

Rob Gronkowski has been cleared to start week one. This is a solid offensive weapon for Tom Brady in addition to his two receivers and Stevan Ridley in the backfield. Pats brought in Darrelle Revis at corner and Dont'a Hightower at linebacker to shore up their defense. Brady is one of the top three passers in the league. Dolphins did sign CB Cortland Finnegan in the off-season to help their secondary. The Dolphins haven't had a winning season in the last five years and Tannehill's QB rating is only 59.4 over his two years in the league. Prediction: Patriots

Decker finished with 1,288 yards and 11 TDs in Denver last season. The Jets also added RB Chris Johnson in the backfield. Johnson struggled last season averaging only 3.9 yards per carry but still finished with over 1,000 yards rushing. Prediction: Jets

They have LeSean McCoy in the backfield who rushed for over 1,600 yards last season. Prediction: Eagles

Cleveland Browns vs Pittsburgh Steelers

Browns will have to win this season without their biggest offensive weapon WR Josh Gordon. QB Brian Hoyer won the starting job over Johnny Manziel and will have WR Miles Austin as a deep threat. RB Ben Tate was signed in the off-season from Houston. He's been the back-up to Arian Foster and has yet to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Steelers have TE Heath Miller back and healthy after a ACL and MCL tear last season. Roethlisberger will also have WR Antonio Brown and RB Le'Veon Bell as offensive weapons. The return of  C Maurkice Pouncy should help the Steelers in their passing game. Prediction: Steelers
